Erottelupylväs, often translated as separation column or fractionation column, is a piece of chemical engineering equipment used in distillation processes. Its primary function is to achieve a better separation between components of a liquid mixture with different boiling points. This is accomplished by providing a large surface area or a series of stages where repeated vaporization and condensation cycles can occur.

The column typically consists of a vertical cylinder containing trays, plates, or packing material. As vapor rises from the reboiler at the bottom, it comes into contact with descending liquid from the condenser at the top. On each tray or within the packing, heat and mass transfer take place. Lighter components (lower boiling points) tend to vaporize and move upwards, while heavier components (higher boiling points) condense and flow downwards. This countercurrent flow and repeated contact lead to a gradual enrichment of the vapor in the more volatile component as it ascends the column, and an enrichment of the liquid in the less volatile component as it descends.

The efficiency of a separation column is often measured by its theoretical plates, which represent hypothetical stages of perfect equilibrium. The design of the column, including its height, diameter, and the type of internal structure (trays or packing), is crucial for achieving the desired degree of separation for specific mixtures. Applications of separation columns are widespread in industries such as petroleum refining, chemical production, and the production of alcoholic beverages.
