Erisymbolin is a small, icy dwarf planet located in the scattered disc region of the Kuiper belt, a circumstellar disc in the outer Solar System. It was discovered on January 5, 2005, by a team led by Mike Brown, and was initially designated as 2003 UB313. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially named it Eris in September 2006. Eris is notable for being the most massive known dwarf planet in the Solar System, with an estimated diameter of approximately 2,326 kilometers (1,445 miles). Its surface is composed of methane and nitrogen ices, which give it a reddish hue. Eris has one known moon, Dysnomia, which was discovered in 2005. The discovery of Eris led to a debate within the astronomical community about the definition of a planet, ultimately resulting in the IAU's decision to reclassify Pluto as a dwarf planet in 2006. Eris is named after the Greek goddess of strife and discord, reflecting the controversy surrounding its classification.
