Equipotentiaalinen is a term used in physics and mathematics to describe points that have the same potential. This concept is most commonly encountered in the context of electric potential and gravitational potential.

In electromagnetism, an equipotential line or surface is a curve or set of points in space where the electric potential is constant. Imagine a contour map where lines connect points of equal elevation; an equipotential line is similar, but it connects points of equal electrical potential. Electric field lines are always perpendicular to equipotential lines or surfaces. This is because the electric field represents the direction of the steepest change in potential, and if it were not perpendicular, there would be a component of the electric field along the equipotential, implying a change in potential, which is a contradiction.

Similarly, in gravitation, equipotential surfaces are surfaces where the gravitational potential energy per unit mass is constant. For a point mass, these surfaces are spheres centered on the mass. Objects moving along an equipotential surface in either an electric or gravitational field do no work.

The concept of equipotential is also relevant in fluid dynamics, where isobaric lines represent points of equal pressure, and in thermodynamics, where isotherms represent points of equal temperature. In essence, equipotential describes a state of uniformity across a set of points concerning a specific physical quantity.
