Equipment capacity refers to the maximum output rate that a piece of equipment or a production system can achieve under specified conditions. It depends on design specifications, operating conditions, and efficiency factors. Capacity is usually expressed as units per hour, per shift, or per day, and distinctions are made between designed capacity and effective capacity.

Designed capacity is the theoretical maximum output assuming ideal conditions, full speed, no downtime, and optimal material flow. Effective capacity accounts for real-world factors such as downtime, maintenance, setup or changeover times, quality losses, and utilities. A common way to express effective capacity is: Effective capacity = Design capacity × Availability × Performance.

Availability measures the proportion of scheduled time the equipment is actually operating, while Performance accounts for speed losses relative to the ideal cycle time. For example, a machine with a cycle time of 2 minutes has a design capacity of 30 units per hour. If uptime is 90% and speed efficiency is 95%, the effective capacity is roughly 30 × 0.90 × 0.95 ≈ 25.6 units per hour.

In batch or line processes, capacity can also be described in terms of batches per hour or per day. Bottlenecks determine overall system capacity; the resource with the lowest effective capacity limits the throughput, and improving the bottleneck raises total capacity.

Usage and planning: Equipment capacity informs capacity planning, scheduling, and capital investment. It relates to throughput, utilization, and load, and is affected by changeovers, maintenance, supply variability, and product mix. Organizations use capacity considerations to meet demand, sustain service levels, and optimize inventory and production plans.
