Epätiivistyminen, often translated as "decondensation" or "unwinding" in English, refers to the process by which the highly coiled and compact structure of chromosomes, known as chromatin, becomes less condensed and more relaxed. This transformation is crucial for various cellular processes, particularly during the cell cycle.

The most prominent example of epätiivistyminen occurs after mitosis, the process of nuclear division. Following the segregation of chromosomes to daughter cells, the tightly packed chromatin fibers begin to unravel. This decondensation allows for the re-establishment of the nuclear envelope and facilitates the access of cellular machinery to the DNA. Gene transcription also requires a less condensed chromatin state, as the complex machinery involved in gene expression needs to bind to specific DNA sequences. Therefore, during interphase, the period between cell divisions, chromosomes are in a relatively decondensed state to allow for DNA replication and gene activity.

Conversely, during cell division (mitosis and meiosis), chromosomes undergo condensation, a process known as tiivistyminen. This compacting is essential for the proper segregation of genetic material to daughter cells, preventing tangling and breakage. Epätiivistyminen, therefore, represents the reversal of this process, preparing the cell for interphase activities or the completion of cell division. The regulation of chromatin condensation and decondensation is a complex process involving various proteins, including histones and non-histone chromosomal proteins, and is critical for maintaining genomic stability and cellular function.
