Epoxihärter, often translated as epoxy hardener or curing agent, is a crucial component in epoxy resin systems. Its primary function is to react with the epoxy resin, initiating a chemical process known as polymerization or curing. This reaction transforms the liquid or semi-liquid resin into a solid, durable, and rigid material. Without a hardener, epoxy resin will not cure and will remain in its uncured state.

Hardeners are typically amine-based compounds, although other chemical families can also be used. The specific type of hardener chosen significantly influences the properties of the cured epoxy, including its strength, flexibility, chemical resistance, heat resistance, and cure time. Different hardeners are designed for specific applications and environmental conditions.

The ratio of epoxy resin to hardener, known as the mix ratio, is critical for achieving optimal curing. Deviating from the recommended ratio can result in incomplete curing, leading to a weaker or tacky final product. Hardeners are usually mixed with the epoxy resin just before application. The time between mixing and the point at which the mixture becomes too viscous to work with is called the pot life. Once mixed and applied, the epoxy system undergoes a curing process that can take anywhere from minutes to days, depending on the specific formulation.
