Epitelio, also known as epithelial tissue, is one of the four basic types of animal tissue, along with connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue. It forms the covering of all surfaces of the body, both internal and external. This includes the lining of organs, cavities, and ducts, as well as the outer layer of the skin.

Epithelial tissues are characterized by tightly packed cells with very little extracellular material between them. These cells are organized in one or more layers and rest on a basement membrane, which separates them from the underlying connective tissue. The primary functions of epithelial tissue include protection, secretion, absorption, excretion, filtration, diffusion, and sensory reception.

Epithelial cells can have different shapes, such as squamous (flat), cuboidal (cube-shaped), or columnar (taller than they are wide). They can also be arranged in different layers, leading to classifications like simple (a single layer) or stratified (multiple layers). Some epithelial tissues also have specialized structures on their apical surface, such as cilia or microvilli, which enhance their functions. For example, ciliated epithelium lines the respiratory tract, helping to move mucus, while the microvilli in the small intestine increase the surface area for absorption. The specific structure of an epithelial tissue is directly related to its function in a particular location within the body.
