Epilithisesti is a term used in biology and ecology to describe organisms that live on the surface of rocks. These organisms are called epiliths. This mode of life is distinct from endolithic organisms, which live within the rock, or lithophytic organisms, which live on other plants growing on rocks.

Epilithic communities are diverse and can be found in a wide range of environments, from deserts to polar regions, and from intertidal zones to high-altitude mountains. Common examples of epiliths include various types of algae, lichens, mosses, cyanobacteria, and some small invertebrates like tardigrades and rotifers. These organisms often play a crucial role in the initial colonization of bare rock surfaces, contributing to the process of primary succession and soil formation.

The survival of epiliths depends on their ability to withstand harsh conditions such as desiccation, extreme temperatures, UV radiation, and limited nutrient availability. Many epiliths have developed specialized adaptations to cope with these challenges. For instance, lichens, which are symbiotic associations between fungi and algae or cyanobacteria, are particularly hardy and can tolerate prolonged periods of drought. Algae and cyanobacteria may produce protective pigments or form biofilms to retain moisture.

The presence and abundance of epilithic organisms can serve as bioindicators of environmental quality, as they are sensitive to changes in air and water pollution, as well as climate. Studying epilithic communities provides valuable insights into ecological processes, biodiversity, and the resilience of ecosystems in extreme environments.
