Epicentra refers to the point on the Earth's surface directly above the hypocenter of an earthquake. The hypocenter, also known as the focus, is the actual location within the Earth where the rupture begins and seismic energy is released. The epicentre is therefore the closest point on the surface to the earthquake's origin.

When an earthquake occurs, seismic waves radiate outwards from the hypocenter in all directions. The epicentre is significant because it is typically the location where the ground shaking is most intense. This is due to the fact that the seismic waves have traveled the shortest distance to reach the surface. Instruments used to detect and measure earthquakes, called seismographs, are often located at stations around the world. The location of the epicentre is determined by analyzing the arrival times of seismic waves recorded at multiple seismograph stations.

The distance from a seismograph station to the epicentre can be calculated using the difference in arrival times between the primary (P) waves and the secondary (S) waves, as these waves travel at different speeds. By triangulating the distances from at least three different seismograph stations, scientists can pinpoint the exact location of the epicentre. Understanding the epicentre is crucial for seismic hazard assessment, urban planning, and emergency response efforts in earthquake-prone regions.
