Epibiontes are organisms that live on the surface of another organism, known as the host. The host organism may or may not be affected by the presence of the epibiont. In many cases, the relationship is commensal, meaning the epibiont benefits and the host is neither harmed nor helped. However, epibiosis can also be mutualistic, where both organisms benefit, or parasitic, where the epibiont harms the host.

Examples include algae growing on the shells of turtles, barnacles attached to whales, or bacteria colonizing the leaves of plants. The epibiont's life cycle is often adapted to its surface-dwelling existence, with specific mechanisms for attachment and nutrient acquisition. The study of epibiontes is important for understanding ecological interactions, community structure, and the transfer of energy and nutrients within ecosystems.
