Epehólyaggyulladás, also known as cholecystitis, is inflammation of the gallbladder. It most commonly occurs when a gallstone obstructs the cystic duct, the tube that connects the gallbladder to the common bile duct. This blockage prevents bile from draining, leading to a buildup of pressure and irritation within the gallbladder, which can then become infected.

Symptoms of epehólyaggyulladás typically include sudden and intense pain in the upper right abdomen, which may radiate to the shoulder or back. This pain can last for several hours. Other symptoms can include fever, nausea, vomiting, and chills. In some cases, jaundice, a yellowing of the skin and eyes, may also be present if the inflammation affects the bile ducts.

The diagnosis of epehólyaggyulladás is usually made based on a patient's medical history, physical examination, and imaging tests. Ultrasound is the most common imaging technique used to visualize gallstones and inflammation of the gallbladder. Blood tests may also be performed to check for signs of infection and inflammation.

Treatment for epehólyaggyulladás often involves hospitalization, pain management, antibiotics to treat any infection, and dietary modifications. In most cases, surgical removal of the gallbladder, a procedure called cholecystectomy, is recommended to prevent future episodes and complications. This surgery can be performed laparoscopically or through an open incision. While the gallbladder has a function in digestion, its removal does not typically cause long-term digestive problems for most individuals.
