Entamoanic refers to conditions or symptoms caused by infection with Entamoeba, a genus of amoeboid protozoa. The most common and medically significant species is Entamoeba histolytica, which is responsible for amebiasis, a parasitic disease affecting humans. Entamoeba also includes species that are non-pathogenic, such as Entamoeba dispar, which often coexist with Entamoeba histolytica.

Infections with Entamoeba are typically transmitted through the fecal-oral route, often via contaminated food or water. Entamoeba histolytica can exist in two forms: the trophozoite, which is the motile and feeding stage, and the cyst, which is the infective and environmentally resistant stage. While many infections are asymptomatic, Entamoeba histolytica can cause invasive disease.

When invasive, Entamoeba histolytica can infect the intestines, leading to amebic colitis, characterized by symptoms such as diarrhea, dysentery (bloody stools), abdominal pain, and fever. In more severe cases, it can lead to complications like toxic megacolon or perforation. Entamoeba histolytica can also spread from the intestines to other organs, most commonly the liver, forming amebic liver abscesses, which can cause fever, abdominal pain, and jaundice. Extraintestinal spread to other organs like the lungs or brain is rare. Diagnosis usually involves microscopic examination of stool samples for cysts or trophozoites, or serological tests. Treatment typically involves antiparasitic medications.
