The concept of the diagonal measurement originates from the Pythagorean theorem. If the width and height of a rectangular screen are known, the diagonal length can be calculated as the square root of the sum of the squares of the width and height. While manufacturers provide the diagonal measurement directly, it's a convenient way to quickly ascertain the overall screen real estate.
