Energidiagrammer, often translated as energy diagrams or potential energy diagrams, are graphical representations used in chemistry and physics to illustrate the energy changes that occur during a chemical reaction or a physical process. They plot the potential energy of a system against the progress of the reaction, known as the reaction coordinate.

A typical energy diagram shows reactants at a certain energy level and products at another. The transition between reactants and products involves passing through a high-energy state called the transition state. The difference in energy between the reactants and the transition state is known as the activation energy, which is the minimum energy required for the reaction to occur.

Exothermic reactions are characterized by products having lower energy than reactants, releasing energy into the surroundings. On an energy diagram, this is shown as a downward slope from reactants to products. Endothermic reactions, conversely, absorb energy from the surroundings, with products having higher energy than reactants, depicted as an upward slope on the diagram.

Energy diagrams are valuable tools for understanding reaction mechanisms, predicting reaction rates, and comprehending concepts like activation energy and enthalpy changes. They provide a visual aid for chemists and physicists to analyze the energetic landscape of transformations.
