Energiamüügi is an Estonian term that refers to the buying and selling of electricity and gas within Estonia’s domestic market. The term encompasses all transactions, whether they take place on exchange platforms, through bilateral contracts, or in the form of retail sales to end users.

The Estonian energy sector began a process of liberalisation in the early 2000s, following the country’s accession to the European Union in 2004. In 2005 the Estonian Energy market structure was re‑formed, creating an independent market operator and allowing private companies to compete in generation, transmission, distribution and retail. Since that time, energiamüügi has evolved from a regulated monopolistic model into a largely competitive market where a few key players manage the bulk of sales.

Regulatory oversight is provided by the Estonian Competition and Consumer Authority and the Estonian Energy Authority. These bodies enforce rules that promote non‑discriminatory access to the network, safeguard consumer interests and ensure that market participants comply with EU energy directives. The National Energy Grid operator, Eesti Energia, remains the main transmission system operator but co‑exists with other local distribution companies.

Current trends in energiamüügi include a shift toward renewable generation, greater use of smart meters, and the integration of cross‑border trade with neighbouring countries through the Nord Pool power exchange and the Baltic pipeline network. These developments aim to increase supply security, reduce costs, and align Estonia’s energy market with broader European sustainability goals.
