Endospores are dormant, tough, and non-reproductive structures produced by some bacteria and archaea. They are formed within the cytoplasm of the bacterial cell and are highly resistant to environmental stresses such as heat, radiation, chemicals, and desiccation. This resistance allows the microorganism to survive unfavorable conditions. When conditions become favorable again, the endospore can germinate and return to a metabolically active vegetative state.
