Endosymbionti refers to a specific type of symbiotic relationship where one organism lives inside another organism. The term originates from the Greek words "endon" meaning inside, "syn" meaning together, and "bios" meaning life. This intimate association is not necessarily parasitic; in many cases, both organisms benefit from the arrangement, a form of mutualism.

A well-known example of endosymbiosis is the origin of eukaryotic cells. The theory of endosymbiosis, proposed by Lynn Margulis, suggests that certain organelles within eukaryotic cells, specifically mitochondria and chloroplasts, were once free-living prokaryotic organisms. These prokaryotes were engulfed by a larger host cell, but instead of being digested, they established a mutually beneficial relationship. The engulfed organism provided energy (through respiration in the case of mitochondria or photosynthesis in the case of chloroplasts), and the host cell provided protection and nutrients. Over evolutionary time, these endosymbionts became integral parts of the host cell, losing much of their independent genetic material and becoming the organelles we recognize today.

Endosymbiosis is also observed in various other organisms. For instance, many insects rely on endosymbiotic bacteria to digest food that they would otherwise be unable to process. Certain marine animals host symbiotic algae within their tissues, which provide them with energy through photosynthesis. These relationships highlight the diverse ways in which organisms have evolved to live in close proximity, with one organism residing within the cells or tissues of another.
