Endometrium is the inner lining of the uterus. It is a mucous membrane that undergoes cyclical changes throughout a woman's reproductive life. Each month, in the absence of pregnancy, the endometrium thickens in preparation for potential implantation. This thickening phase is driven by estrogen. If fertilization and implantation do not happen, hormone levels drop, leading to the breakdown and shedding of the endometrium. This shedding process is what constitutes menstruation, or a menstrual period. Following menstruation, the endometrium begins to regenerate and thicken again, starting a new cycle. The thickness and structure of the endometrium can be assessed through various medical imaging techniques and biopsies.
