Endokarde is the innermost lining of the heart chambers and valves. It is a thin, smooth membrane composed of endothelial cells, which are also found lining blood vessels. The smooth surface of the endokarde is crucial for efficient blood flow, preventing friction and the formation of blood clots.

The endokarde plays a vital role in the proper functioning of the heart. It covers the endocardium, which is the overall internal layer of the heart wall. Within the endokarde are structures called chordae tendineae, which are fibrous cords that attach the papillary muscles to the tricuspid and mitral valves. These attachments are essential for preventing the valves from prolapsing or inverting during ventricular contraction.

Inflammation of the endokarde is known as endocarditis. This condition can be caused by infections, such as bacteria or fungi, which can enter the bloodstream and attach to damaged or abnormal areas of the endokarde. Symptoms of endocarditis can include fever, fatigue, and heart murmurs. If left untreated, endocarditis can lead to serious complications, including heart valve damage, heart failure, and stroke. Regular dental hygiene is often recommended to prevent bacteria from entering the bloodstream and potentially causing endocarditis.
