The endocannabinoid system, often abbreviated as ECS, is a complex cell-signaling system present in humans and other animals. Endocannabinoids are naturally produced molecules in the body that are structurally similar to cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. The two most well-known endocannabinoids are anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). These compounds bind to cannabinoid receptors.

Cannabinoid receptors are proteins found on the surface of cells throughout the body. The two primary types are cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) and cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2). CB1 receptors are predominantly found in the brain and central nervous system, influencing cognitive and emotional states. CB2 receptors are mainly located in the peripheral nervous system and immune cells, modulating inflammation and pain responses.

Enzymes are responsible for synthesizing and breaking down endocannabinoids. Key enzymes include fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), which degrades anandamide, and monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL), which breaks down 2-AG. The precise balance of these components is essential for maintaining homeostasis. The ECS is believed to be involved in various conditions, and research continues to explore its therapeutic potential.
