In an O/W emulsion, oil droplets are dispersed in a continuous water phase, making the emulsion appear milky and allowing it to be diluted with water. In a W/O emulsion, water droplets are dispersed in a continuous oil phase, and these emulsions are typically greasy and can be diluted with oil. The choice between O/W and W/O depends on the solubility of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and the desired route of administration.

Emulsioonravimid offer several advantages. They can mask the unpleasant taste or odor of certain drugs, making them more palatable for oral administration. They can also improve the bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs by increasing their surface area for absorption. Furthermore, emulsions can be formulated for various delivery routes, including oral, topical, parenteral (injection), and ophthalmic applications. The stability of an emulsion is crucial and is maintained by the emulsifying agent, which reduces interfacial tension between the two phases and prevents droplet coalescence. Common emulsifying agents include surfactants, gums, and finely dispersed solids. The manufacturing process and storage conditions are carefully controlled to ensure the integrity and efficacy of the emulsioonravim.
