Emissioaaltoja, or emission waves, are waves produced when energy is released by a source. The term is used in Finnish physics to describe waves generated by emission processes, and it covers a range of phenomena from electromagnetic radiation to acoustic waves emitted by vibrating or moving matter. In practice, emissioaaltoja describe how energy propagates away from a source in the form of oscillating fields or displacements.

Electromagnetic emission waves are the most common type discussed. They arise from accelerating electric charges, such as electrons in an antenna or electrons transitioning between energy levels in atoms and molecules. Electromagnetic waves propagate through vacuum at the speed of light, c, and their frequency and wavelength are related by λ = c/f. In a medium, the wave speed is reduced and depends on the medium’s refractive index, so λ = v/f. Characteristics such as amplitude, phase, polarization and coherence determine how the wave interacts with matter and how it is detected.

Emission mechanisms can be spontaneous, as in natural atomic or molecular transitions, or stimulated, as described by quantum electrodynamics. Thermal radiation, including black-body spectra, is another form of emission. Bremsstrahlung and other processes also contribute to continuous emission in various environments. While electromagnetism is a central focus, emissioaaltoja can also refer to acoustic or elastic waves produced by emission processes in solids, such as waves generated by rapid stress changes during material deformation, which are studied in non-destructive testing.

Applications of emissioaaltoja include communications, sensing, spectroscopy, imaging, and lighting. Measurement and analysis of emitted waves provide information about the source, the medium, and the interactions between them.
