Eläinkudoksen refers to animal tissue, which is a collection of cells that are similar in structure and perform a specific function. In biology, tissues are organized into organs, and organs work together to form organ systems. Animal tissues are broadly classified into four main types: epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue.

Epithelial tissue covers body surfaces and lines cavities and organs. It serves functions such as protection, secretion, absorption, and filtration. Examples include the skin and the lining of the digestive tract. Connective tissue supports, binds, or separates other tissues and organs. It is characterized by cells embedded in an extracellular matrix. Bone, cartilage, blood, and adipose tissue are all types of connective tissue.

Muscle tissue is specialized for contraction, enabling movement. There are three types of muscle tissue: skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle. Skeletal muscle is voluntary and found in limbs and other body parts that we consciously move. Smooth muscle is involuntary and found in internal organs like the digestive tract and blood vessels. Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart and is also involuntary. Nervous tissue is responsible for transmitting electrical signals throughout the body, allowing for communication and coordination. It is composed of neurons and glial cells, forming the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. The study of animal tissues is called histology.
