Elágazás is a Hungarian noun that literally translates to “branching.” The word is formed from the verb elágazni, which means “to branch out” or “to diverge,” and the noun suffix -ás. It is used in a variety of contexts in which a main line or entity splits into separate lines or parts.

In a botanical or horticultural sense elágazás refers to the physical branching of a tree or plant stem. Botany and forestry texts discuss elágazás patterns, noting that the angle, frequency, and direction of branches determine the overall shape of the organism. The term is also applied to geological formations, where a main fault line or river delta may exhibit elágazás, producing a network of smaller offshoots.
