Elevaatio is an architectural drawing that presents a building’s vertical surfaces. It typically shows both exterior facades and, in the case of interior elevations, interior walls and finishes. Elevations are one of the core drawing types in architectural documentation, alongside plans and sections, and they are usually drawn to scale using orthographic projection.

Content and conventions: An elevation illustrates the arrangement of openings such as windows and doors, facade treatments (materials and textures), roof lines, cornices, parapets, and other vertical features. It also provides height information, such as overall building height, storey heights, and the alignment of features across the façade. Dimensions are accompanied by notes specifying materials and finishes.

Types and usage: Exterior elevations cover each visible façade (front, rear, and sides). Interior elevations convey details on interior walls, including cabinetry, tiles, or wall finishes. Elevation drawings are used for design authorization, permitting, pricing, and construction, and they must be consistent with floor plans and sections.

Production and notation: Elevations are typically produced from a building information model or drafted in CAD. They use standard scales (for example 1:50 or 1:100) and include alignment references, a north arrow, and callouts for materials and openings.
