Elementærpartikkel is the Norwegian term for elementary particle. In physics, an elementary particle is a particle whose structure is unknown, meaning it is not known to be composed of other particles. Elementary particles are the fundamental constituents of matter and the carriers of fundamental forces. They are the basic building blocks of the universe as described by the Standard Model of particle physics.

The Standard Model categorizes elementary particles into two main groups: fermions and bosons. Fermions are further divided into quarks and leptons. There are six types of quarks (up, down, charm, strange, top, and bottom) and six types of leptons (electron, muon, tau, and their corresponding neutrinos). These particles have half-integer spin and obey Fermi-Dirac statistics, meaning no two identical fermions can occupy the same quantum state simultaneously. Quarks combine to form composite particles called hadrons, such as protons and neutrons, while leptons do not experience the strong nuclear force.

Bosons are particles with integer spin and obey Bose-Einstein statistics. They are responsible for mediating the fundamental forces of nature. The Standard Model includes the photon (electromagnetic force), the W and Z bosons (weak nuclear force), and the gluon (strong nuclear force). The Higgs boson is also a fundamental particle, responsible for giving mass to other elementary particles. There is also the hypothetical graviton, which would mediate the force of gravity. The study of elementary particles is a core area of particle physics, involving sophisticated experiments in particle accelerators to probe the fundamental nature of reality.
