It refers to the principle that in any electrically neutral system, the total positive charge must equal the total negative charge. This ensures that the overall substance or solution has no net electrical charge.

In the context of ionic compounds, electron balance is maintained by the precise ratio of cations (positively charged ions) and anions (negatively charged ions) that form the compound. For example, in sodium chloride (NaCl), one sodium ion (Na+) with a +1 charge combines with one chloride ion (Cl-) with a -1 charge, resulting in a neutral compound. If the charges were unequal, the compound would not be electrically neutral.

When ionic compounds dissolve in water, they dissociate into their constituent ions. The concept of electron balance then extends to the solution itself. The sum of the charges of all cations present must equal the sum of the charges of all anions present. For instance, in a solution of NaCl, the concentration of Na+ ions multiplied by their +1 charge must balance the concentration of Cl- ions multiplied by their -1 charge. Deviations from this balance can indicate the presence of other ions or a non-equilibrium state.
