An elektronilähde, or electron source, is a device or material that emits electrons. These sources are fundamental components in many scientific and technological applications. The emission of electrons can occur through various mechanisms, each suited for different purposes.

One common method is thermionic emission, where heating a material, typically a filament, to a high temperature causes electrons to gain enough energy to overcome the material's work function and escape. Vacuum tubes and older cathode ray tubes utilized this principle. Another mechanism is field emission, where a strong electric field is applied to a sharp point or edge, pulling electrons out of the material. This is often seen in scanning electron microscopes. Photoelectric emission, where light strikes a material and ejects electrons, is the basis for photomultiplier tubes and solar cells. Secondary emission occurs when a material is bombarded by high-energy particles, causing it to release its own electrons.

The choice of electron source depends heavily on the desired electron energy, beam current, spatial resolution, and operating environment. Understanding the principles of electron emission is crucial for the design and operation of devices ranging from particle accelerators to electron microscopes and various display technologies.
