Elektronegatív is a term used in chemistry to describe the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons. This property is fundamental to understanding chemical bonding and molecular structure. When two atoms form a covalent bond, the electrons in that bond are not necessarily shared equally. The atom with higher electronegativity will pull the shared electrons closer to itself, resulting in a polar covalent bond. If the electronegativity difference between two atoms is very large, the bond will be considered ionic, where one atom essentially "takes" the electron from the other.
