An elektromyogrammi, often abbreviated as EMG, is a diagnostic technique used to evaluate the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles. It is performed by inserting fine needle electrodes into the muscles being tested. These electrodes detect the tiny electrical signals that are generated when muscles contract and relax. An EMG can also be used to detect nerve dysfunction, as the electrical signals are transmitted from nerves to muscles.

The procedure typically involves several steps. First, a medical professional will explain the procedure and answer any questions. Then, the skin over the area to be tested will be cleaned. A fine needle electrode is then inserted into the muscle. The patient may be asked to contract and relax the muscle to observe the electrical activity. The signals detected by the electrode are displayed on a monitor and can also be recorded. Another part of the examination is nerve conduction studies, where electrodes are placed on the skin and a mild electrical impulse is delivered to stimulate the nerve. The resulting electrical activity is then measured.

EMGs are used to diagnose a variety of neuromuscular disorders, including carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, muscular dystrophy, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). They can help pinpoint the location and severity of nerve or muscle damage. The procedure is generally safe, with minor discomfort or bruising at the needle insertion sites being the most common side effects.
