The process involves dissolving aluminum oxide (alumina) in a molten cryolite electrolyte, which lowers the smelting point of alumina and allows for the extraction of aluminum through electrolysis.

The elektrolüüseriteni process typically involves several key steps. First, bauxite ore is refined to produce alumina, which is then dissolved in a molten cryolite bath. The electrolyte is maintained at high temperatures, usually between 950°C and 1000°C. An electric current is then passed through the electrolyte, with carbon electrodes acting as the anode and cathode. At the cathode, aluminum is deposited, while oxygen gas is released at the anode.

One of the main advantages of the elektrolüüseriteni process is its efficiency. It requires less energy than other aluminum production methods, such as the Hall-Héroult process, which uses a different electrolyte and electrode configuration. Additionally, the process can be operated continuously, making it suitable for large-scale industrial production.

However, the elektrolüüseriteni process also has some environmental impacts. The production of alumina from bauxite ore can release significant amounts of greenhouse gases and other pollutants. Furthermore, the process generates waste products, such as spent electrolyte and anode butts, which require proper disposal or recycling.

In recent years, there has been growing interest in developing more sustainable aluminum production methods. Some researchers are exploring alternative electrolytes and electrode materials that could reduce the energy requirements and environmental impacts of the elektrolüüseriteni process. However, as of now, the process remains the dominant method for aluminum production due to its efficiency and scalability.
