Elektrokardiograafia, commonly known as an ECG or EKG, is a medical diagnostic tool used to record the electrical activity of the heart. This non-invasive procedure measures the electrical signals generated by the heart muscle as it contracts and relaxes. The device used is called an elektrokardiograaf.

The elektrokardiograaf records these electrical impulses as a series of waves and deflections on a graph, which are then interpreted by a healthcare professional. These patterns provide crucial information about the heart's rate, rhythm, and overall electrical conduction. Abnormalities in these patterns can indicate various cardiac conditions, such as arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), myocardial infarction (heart attack), or hypertrophy (enlarged heart muscle).

During an ECG, electrodes are attached to the patient's skin at specific locations on the chest, arms, and legs. These electrodes detect the faint electrical currents produced by the heart. The elektrokardiograaf then amplifies these signals and displays them on a screen or prints them on paper. The procedure is quick, painless, and requires no special preparation from the patient.
