Elektrifikace is the process of providing electric power to a region, sector, or mode of transport by building and expanding electrical infrastructure, including generation, transmission, and distribution facilities. It enables the conversion of energy into electricity to supply homes, businesses, industry, and transportation. The term is used across contexts such as rural electrification, industrial electrification, and transport electrification.

Historically, electrification began in the late 19th century with the development of electric power systems and grids. Widespread rural electrification and modernization accelerated in the 20th century as governments built generation plants, transmission lines, and distribution networks. In the transport sector, electrification includes railways, trams, and growing networks for electric road vehicles and charging infrastructure. The expansion of the grid and diversification of generation sources—hydro, coal, nuclear, and renewables—are central to most electrification efforts.

Benefits include improved energy reliability, productivity, and living standards, along with reduced local air pollution when using low-emission generation. Electrification can enable energy efficiency and decarbonization when coupled with clean generation and storage. Challenges include high capital costs, grid capacity and resilience, regulatory and market barriers, and ensuring access in remote areas.

Current trends emphasize distributed generation, microgrids, energy storage, smart grids, and rapid deployment of charging networks for electric vehicles. In many countries, elektrifikace is a key pillar of climate, energy, and infrastructure policy.
