This method is widely used for shaping various materials, including plastics, metals, and composites. The core principle involves applying pressure to force the material through an opening, thereby giving it the desired form.

In plastic extrusion, for example, thermoplastic pellets are fed into a heated barrel where a rotating screw melts and homogenizes the material. This molten plastic is then forced through a die, which determines the shape of the final product, such as pipes, films, or profiles. The extruded material is then cooled and solidified, often by passing it through a water bath or air cooling system.

Metal extrusion, on the other hand, typically involves heating a metal billet to a semi-molten state and then pressing it through a die using a hydraulic press. This process is used to create complex metal shapes that would be difficult or impossible to achieve through rolling or casting. Both hot and cold extrusion methods exist, depending on the metal's properties and the desired final product.
