Ekstraktionskolonner are a type of industrial equipment used for liquid-liquid extraction. This process involves separating components of a mixture based on their differing solubilities in two immiscible liquids. In an extraction column, one liquid, the feed, containing the solute to be extracted, flows counter-currently to a second liquid, the solvent, which selectively dissolves the solute.

The design of an extraction column aims to maximize the interfacial area between the two liquid phases to enhance mass transfer. This can be achieved through various internal structures. Common types include packed columns, where the column is filled with packing material to increase surface area, and sieve tray columns, which use perforated trays to create droplets of one phase dispersed within the other. Agitated columns, such as mixer-settlers or pulsed columns, employ mechanical agitation or pulsed fluid flow to improve mixing and separation efficiency.

The operation of an extraction column involves carefully controlling flow rates of both the feed and solvent, as well as temperature and pressure, to optimize the separation process. The choice of solvent is critical and depends on the specific components being separated and their properties. Extraction columns are widely used in various industries, including petroleum refining, chemical processing, pharmaceuticals, and food production, for purposes such as purification of products, recovery of valuable substances, and removal of impurities.
