Eksponenciale refers to phenomena or functions characterized by growth or decay at a rate proportional to the current quantity. In mathematics, exponential behavior is described by functions whose rate of change is proportional to the function itself, leading to rapid increases or decreases over time. Exponential models appear in natural and social sciences, economics, and engineering.

An exponential function has the form f(x) = a^x with a > 0 and a ≠ 1. The most important special case is the natural exponential function f(x) = e^x, where e is Euler's number, approximately 2.71828. The function a^x can be rewritten as e^{x ln a}, which is convenient for calculus. Exponential functions are continuous, differentiable, and either increasing (a > 1) or decreasing (0 < a < 1). The derivative is d/dx a^x = a^x ln a, and d/dx e^x = e^x. The integral ∫ a^x dx = a^x / ln a + C.

A common series representation is e^x = 1 + x + x^2/2! + x^3/3! + ... For a^x, one uses a^x = e^{x ln a}. Exponentials model continuous growth or decay, with doubling time t_d equal to ln 2 divided by k for growth rate k, or half-life t_{1/2} equal to ln 2 divided by λ for decay rate.

Applications include compound interest, population growth, radioactive decay, chemical kinetics, and many areas of physics and engineering. Exponential functions also underpin numerous statistical distributions and analysis methods through their role as the kernel of natural processes.
