Effluente (in English: effluent) refers to liquid waste or outflow that is discharged from a source such as a sewer, industrial facility, or wastewater treatment plant. It includes municipal wastewater, industrial effluents, and urban runoff that enter rivers, lakes or coastal waters. The term distinguishes the discharged material from influent, the incoming wastewater that feeds a treatment facility.

Sources and composition: municipal wastewater contains organic matter, nutrients, pathogens; industrial effluents vary widely depending on the process. Stormwater can carry sediments, oils, metals; agricultural runoff may contain nutrients and pesticides. Effluents may be untreated or treated; effluent quality depends on treatment stage and regulatory limits.

Environmental and regulatory context: discharges can affect dissolved oxygen, cause eutrophication, and spread pollutants. Many countries require permits outlining allowable concentrations of pollutants such as BOD, COD, total suspended solids, nitrogen and phosphorus, and sometimes metals and priority pollutants. Agencies such as the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the European Environment Agency, and equivalent national bodies oversee permits and monitoring.

Treatment and management: municipal treatment typically includes primary sedimentation, secondary biological treatment, and possibly tertiary treatment and disinfection. Industrial pretreatment reduces contaminants before release. Monitoring is performed by sampling and continuous instrumentation to verify compliance with permitted limits.
