Eesnäärmetele refers to the prostate gland in Estonian. The prostate is a small, walnut-sized gland in the male reproductive system. It is located below the bladder and in front of the rectum. The primary function of the prostate is to produce fluid that nourishes and transports sperm, known as seminal fluid. This fluid contributes to the volume of semen.

The prostate gland plays a role in male fertility and sexual function. Its secretions are alkaline, helping to neutralize the acidity of the female reproductive tract, which enhances sperm survival.

Common conditions affecting the prostate include prostatitis, which is inflammation of the gland, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that can cause urinary problems, and prostate cancer, a malignant tumor that develops in the prostate. Regular medical check-ups, especially for men over 50, are important for early detection of prostate issues. These check-ups may include digital rectal examinations and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, may also contribute to prostate health.
