edelweiß

Edelweiss is a small, white, woolly flower that grows in mountainous regions of Europe, particularly in the Alps. Its scientific name is Leontopodium alpinum. The plant is known for its star-shaped, felt-like petals, which are actually modified leaves called bracts. These bracts surround a cluster of tiny yellow-green flower heads. Edelweiss thrives in rocky, alpine meadows and on limestone cliffs at high altitudes, typically above 1,800 meters (5,900 feet).

The flower's tough, fuzzy exterior helps it survive harsh alpine conditions, including strong sunlight, cold temperatures, and wind. Edelweiss has a long history of use in traditional medicine, believed to have properties that could treat various ailments. It has also become a symbol of mountaineering, purity, and courage. Due to its rarity and the difficulty in cultivating it outside its natural habitat, edelweiss is often protected in many regions, and its collection is restricted or prohibited. It is a national symbol of Switzerland and Austria, and its image appears on various emblems and currency.
