Origin of the name traces to the excavation site designation Edas (from Greek-derived nomenclature used in some reconstructions) combined with the suffix -istes to indicate adherents or inhabitants. The concept emerged in scholarly and narrative discussions as a way to group scattered material finds that show similar pottery styles, beadmaking, and boat-building techniques.

The material culture attributed to edasistes comprises red-slip or burnished ceramic ware with geometric incisions, small bronze implements, and maritime artifacts such as anchor-shaped objects and model ships.
