Economie, or economics, is the social science that studies how individuals, firms, and governments allocate scarce resources to satisfy wants. It examines the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. The field is typically divided into microeconomics, which analyzes individual decision making and markets, and macroeconomics, which looks at the economy as a whole.

Scarcity and choice imply that resources have alternative uses. Markets coordinate choices through prices, guiding producers and consumers toward efficient allocations. However, markets are imperfect; information gaps, externalities, and public goods can justify public intervention.

Policy tools, including fiscal policy (government spending and taxation) and monetary policy (control of money supply and interest rates), aim to influence economic outcomes.

Key indicators include gross domestic product, unemployment, inflation, and productivity. Economists use models and data analysis to study behavior, test theories, and forecast cycles. Evaluation also considers distributional effects and sustainability.

On the international stage, trade, comparative advantage, and exchange rates link national economies. Globalization raises opportunities and challenges, including competition, capital flows, and development disparities. Development economics studies how economies grow, reduce poverty, and address institutions and governance.
