Ebapuhtus is a rare, inherited metabolic disorder that affects the body's ability to process certain fats. This condition is caused by a deficiency in a specific enzyme, leading to the buildup of abnormal fatty substances in cells, particularly in the brain, liver, and spleen. The accumulation of these lipids can impair organ function over time.

Symptoms of ebapuhtus typically appear in infancy or early childhood, although milder forms may present later. Early signs can include developmental delays, feeding difficulties, enlarged liver and spleen, and sometimes seizures. As the disease progresses, individuals may experience neurological deterioration, vision problems, hearing loss, and skeletal abnormalities. The severity and progression of the disorder can vary significantly among affected individuals.

Diagnosis of ebapuhtus is usually made through a combination of clinical evaluation, biochemical testing to measure enzyme activity or detect abnormal lipid levels in blood or urine, and genetic testing to identify the specific mutation responsible for the enzyme deficiency. Currently, there is no cure for ebapuhtus. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and supportive care. This may include dietary modifications, enzyme replacement therapy (though not available for all forms), and medications to address specific complications like seizures. Research is ongoing to develop more effective therapies and a deeper understanding of the disease mechanisms.
