dómnefndir
Dómnefndir, also known as district courts, are a type of court in Iceland that handle civil and criminal cases. They are the primary courts for most Icelanders, as they are responsible for the majority of cases that do not require the expertise of higher courts. Dómnefndir are located in each of Iceland's eight regions, and they are staffed by judges who are appointed by the President of Iceland. The judges are responsible for both the trial and the sentencing of cases, and they have the authority to impose penalties up to a certain limit. In criminal cases, dómnefndir can impose fines, community service, or imprisonment for up to two years. In civil cases, they can award damages, issue injunctions, or make other orders as necessary. Dómnefndir also have the power to issue warrants for the arrest of suspects and to order searches and seizures. They are an important part of Iceland's legal system, providing a fair and efficient means of resolving disputes and enforcing the law.
