Dízelüzemanyagot, commonly known as diesel fuel, is a liquid fuel used in diesel engines. It is derived from petroleum through a fractional distillation process. The composition of diesel fuel varies depending on the crude oil source and refining methods, but it primarily consists of hydrocarbons with carbon chains typically ranging from twelve to twenty carbons. It is less volatile than gasoline and has a higher energy density.

Diesel fuel is characterized by its cetane number, which indicates its ignition quality. A higher cetane number means the fuel ignites more readily under compression, leading to smoother engine operation and reduced knocking. Additives are often blended into diesel fuel to improve its performance and meet various environmental standards. These can include anti-wear agents, cetane improvers, detergents, and cold flow improvers to prevent fuel gelling in low temperatures.

The primary application of diesel fuel is in transportation, powering trucks, buses, trains, and ships. It is also used in agricultural machinery, construction equipment, and in generators for electricity production. While offering good fuel economy and torque, diesel engines and their fuel have historically been associated with higher emissions of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides compared to gasoline engines. Modern diesel engines and advanced exhaust aftertreatment systems have significantly reduced these emissions. Environmental regulations continue to drive the development of cleaner diesel fuels and more efficient combustion technologies.
