Dzavadzimu is a term that refers to the ancestral spirits in Shona traditional beliefs, primarily practiced by the Shona people of Zimbabwe. These spirits are believed to be the departed ancestors of a family or clan, who continue to influence the lives of the living. Dzavadzimu are not seen as divine beings, but rather as intermediaries between the living and the supreme creator. They are believed to watch over their descendants, offering guidance, protection, and sometimes intervening in earthly matters.

The concept of dzavadzimu is central to Shona cosmology and social structure. It emphasizes the importance of lineage, respect for elders, and the continuation of family traditions. When individuals face difficulties, experience misfortune, or seek blessings, they often turn to their dzavadzimu for help. This is typically done through prayer, offerings, and ceremonies conducted by family elders or traditional healers (svikiro). The svikiro are individuals believed to be possessed by the spirits of the ancestors, acting as their voices and representatives on earth.

Disrespect towards elders or the violation of social norms can be seen as angering the dzavadzimu, potentially leading to spiritual retribution in the form of illness, bad luck, or other afflictions. Conversely, maintaining good relationships with the living and honoring the deceased is believed to ensure the favor and support of the ancestral spirits. The veneration of dzavadzimu plays a significant role in maintaining social cohesion and moral order within Shona communities.
