Dyskrasia is a general medical term derived from Greek roots meaning "bad mixture." It refers to an abnormal condition or imbalance within the body, often related to the blood or other bodily fluids. Historically, the concept of dyscrasia was central to humoral theory, which proposed that health depended on the balance of four bodily fluids: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. An excess or deficiency of any of these humors was considered a dyscrasia.

In modern medicine, the term dyscrasia is less frequently used in its original humoral sense. Instead, it is primarily employed to describe certain blood disorders. Specifically, it is often used to refer to conditions where there is an abnormal proliferation or deficiency of one or more types of blood cells, such as white blood cells, red blood cells, or platelets. Examples of conditions that might be broadly categorized as a blood dyscrasia include leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and myelodysplastic syndromes. These disorders involve problems with the production, function, or maturation of blood cells within the bone marrow. The term can also, in a broader sense, be applied to other imbalances in bodily composition, though its specific usage is most prevalent in hematology.
