Dyskinésias refers to a group of neurological movement disorders characterized by involuntary, abnormal movements. These movements can manifest in various ways, including writhing, twisting, jerking, or sustained abnormal postures. The term itself comes from Greek words meaning "difficult" and "movement."

The underlying cause of dyskinesias is often damage or dysfunction within the basal ganglia, a group of subcortical brain structures crucial for regulating voluntary movement, motor control, and cognition. This damage can result from various conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and Wilson's disease. They can also be a side effect of certain medications, particularly those used to treat Parkinson's disease, such as levodopa. Other potential causes include stroke, traumatic brain injury, and certain metabolic or genetic disorders.

The symptoms of dyskinesias vary widely depending on the specific type and the affected area of the brain. Some common forms include chorea, characterized by rapid, jerky, dance-like movements; athetosis, which involves slow, writhing, and purposeless movements; dystonia, defined by sustained muscle contractions leading to abnormal postures and repetitive movements; and ballism, featuring violent, flinging movements of the limbs.

Diagnosing dyskinesias typically involves a thorough neurological examination, a review of medical history, and sometimes imaging studies like MRI or CT scans to identify potential underlying causes. Treatment strategies focus on managing the underlying condition and alleviating the involuntary movements. This may include adjusting medication dosages, switching to different medications, or employing therapies such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy. In some cases, deep brain stimulation or other surgical interventions may be considered.
