Dusík, also known as nitrogen, is a chemical element with the symbol N and atomic number 7. It is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas at standard temperature and pressure, and it is the most abundant gas in Earth's atmosphere, making up about 78% of the air we breathe. Nitrogen is a nonmetal and belongs to the pnictogen group in the periodic table.

In its elemental form, nitrogen exists as diatomic molecules (N₂), which are very stable and unreactive due to the strong triple bond between the two nitrogen atoms. This stability is why nitrogen gas is often used as an inert atmosphere in various industrial processes and for food preservation. Despite its inertness in its gaseous state, nitrogen is a crucial component of life. It is a key element in amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, and in nucleic acids, such as DNA and RNA.

Nitrogen cycles through the environment through a process called the nitrogen cycle, involving atmospheric nitrogen, nitrogen fixed by bacteria, and its incorporation into organic matter. Industrially, nitrogen is produced through the fractional distillation of liquid air. It is used in the production of ammonia, fertilizers, explosives, and in various chemical synthesis processes. Nitrogen compounds are also used in pharmaceuticals and other specialized applications.
