Duplex ultrasonography is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that combines two forms of ultrasound: B-mode imaging and Doppler ultrasound. B-mode provides a two-dimensional anatomical view of blood vessels, allowing visualization of their structure, size, and any abnormalities within the vessel walls like plaque buildup. Doppler ultrasound, on the other hand, measures the speed and direction of blood flow within the vessels. By analyzing the frequency shift of the sound waves reflected by moving blood cells, it can detect obstructions, narrowing (stenosis), or clots.

This dual capability makes duplex ultrasonography particularly useful for evaluating the circulatory system. It is commonly employed to assess arteries and veins in various parts of the body, including the neck (carotid arteries), legs, arms, and abdomen. Physicians use duplex ultrasound to diagnose conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), peripheral artery disease (PAD), carotid artery stenosis which is a risk factor for stroke, and aneurysms. The procedure is painless, does not involve radiation, and can be performed at the bedside, making it a versatile diagnostic tool in vascular medicine.
