Dualité is a central idea in many disciplines, referring to the existence or interaction of two distinct yet related aspects or principles within a single system. The term is used across philosophy, mathematics, physics, linguistics, and the sciences to describe a reciprocal or complementary relationship, often with implications for how a phenomenon is modeled or interpreted.

In philosophy, dualité typically denotes theories that posit two fundamental kinds of substance, principle, or reality. Classical mind–body dualism, associated with René Descartes, argues that mind and body are distinct substances. Other forms address ethical, epistemological, or ontological pairings, such as the tension between freedom and determinism or appearance and reality.

In mathematics and logic, dualité refers to a correspondence between structures that reverses certain operations or relations. Notable examples include projective duality, which links points and lines; linear programming duality, relating optimization problems of opposite directions; and dualities in category theory, where contravariant relations reveal mirrored structures. These dualities often yield complementary perspectives and enable transfer of results between contexts.

In physics, dualité denotes equivalences between seemingly different theories or descriptions of the same phenomena. Wave–particle duality in quantum mechanics is a classic instance; electromagnetic duality relates electric and magnetic fields; more modern examples include various gauge–gravity dualities in string theory that connect weakly and strongly coupled regimes.

In linguistics, the concept appears as the dualité of patterning, describing how language combines meaningless sounds into meaningful units and further into complex messages, a feature of human communication.
